Twelve Years of Song and Spirit: Celebrating the Christmas Concert Legacy
What began in 2013 as a simple seasonal gathering has grown into a cherished annual tradition that brings joy, generosity and music to the heart of the community. The SALU Christmas Concerts – now fondly supported by the SALUTE Praise Group – have become more than entertainment: they’ve become an embodiment of welcome, celebration, and compassion.
Even during the challenges of COVID, an online concert kept the tradi9on alive, ensuring that the community could still come together, even though physically apart.
A Warm Welcome Every Time
Guests are greeted with mulled wine and festive cheer, setting the tone for an evening of warmth and connection. Compères Ian McKay and Jim Gibson consistently add sparkle and laughter to the evenings with their unique blend of humour and hospitality.
Celebrating Talent and Togetherness
From congregational hymns and heartfelt readings to short dramas filled with laughter – who could forget Isabel and Marlene’s unforgettable turn as Gary and Baab the ‘sheep’? — each concert showcases the vibrant creativity within and around the congregation.
Musical contributions have come from a remarkable cast of guests:
– Ann Dartnall’s Bell Ringers
– Flute Cocktail, led by Rosemary Anderson
– Fiona Kyle on her harp
– The Collie children’s musical group
– Caitlyn Gilliland on cello
– Bellie Praise Group, The Dotty Crotchets, Ross Cumming… and more.
Music with Meaning
These concerts don’t just lift spirits – they also lift lives. Over the years, generous audiences have helped raise over £3000 for causes including Friends of the Oaks, Guide Dogs, Salvation Army, Shelter, and humanitarian relief for people in Afghanistan and Yemen.
Sweet Fellowship
No concert is complete without the gathering in the hall afterwards for refreshments, which included shortbread and clootie dumpling, and above all, community fellowship.
